AMSTERDAM!

Amsterdam was absolutely BEAUTIFUL!!!
On my way over to Germany I had a 5 hour layover in Amsterdam and I just HAD to get out of the airport and check it out! I took the train into the city center which ended up being a huge pain in the butt. Trains were late and kept getting canceled and I felt like I was running all over the station! It wasted a lot of time. I finally made it to Central Station in Amsterdam and set out to explore! The city is absolutely amazing! There were huge, ornate buildings everywhere... and the BIKES!! Oh, there must not be a single person in Amsterdam who doesn't ride a bike! They had parking garages for bikes and separate roads with signal lights and everything! I found out the hard way that pedestrians do NOT have the right of way... Twice I found myself in the way of a biker and I'm fairly sure the phrases coming out of their mouths were not apologies for almost running me over! I had planned on touring the Anne Frank house, but by the time I arrived there was an enormous line and with all the time wasted at the train station I was worried I would be pushing the limit getting back to the airport for my connecting flight. That was a HUGE disappointment. I ended up taking a picture of the outside and the Anne Frank Huis sign. On the positive side, I had more time to wander along the canals of Amsterdam. I came across a bustling street market and explored that for a while. It seemed like so many people at the market were eating Vietnamese lumpia and I figured I would eat what the locals eat! I found the lumpia stand and it was packed with people waiving their money in the air, calling out their orders. I shoved myself right in the middle of the crowd and ordered a "mix" which from what I could hear, was the most common order. I had no idea what I ordered and I was so relieved when I was given a little basket of assorted lumpia. It was really nice to wander around Amsterdam with my street food and just soaking up the atmosphere! The city was almost surreal to me... canals, boats, musicians performing on every other bridge... It's a place I definitely must come back to visit again!

Too much luggage?!?!?!?!!!

In the one day I had post-finals to frantically pack for my trip, I managed to fill a rolling suitcase (kindly donated by Aunt Marijane), a duffel bag, a laptop tote bag, AND my purse! How in the world is one supposed to pack "light" whe traveling to freezing cold weather?! My body had finally acclimated to Arizona's extreme heat, where even in November the temperatures consistantly reach into the 80's, and now I'm headed to Germany where the high is 50 degrees on a good day! I'm sure I over-packed, but I refuse to be cold!
I'm in the air now, flying to Minneapolis (the pilot just announced that it is currently 34 degrees there... brrrrrr!). There I switch planes and depart on an 8.5 hour flight to Amsterdam! I'll arrive in the Netherlands around 11:00am, and my first adventure will begin!!!

I'm Headed to Germ-town!

Yes, that's right! You heard it! I have decided to take a trip and of all the places in the world to choose from, I chose DEUTSCHLAND! The land of beer and sausage!!!
The idea of me traveling to Germany sprouted when my friends Claudia and Synthia decided that they were going to take their vacation days from work and go visit our friend Natalie who is studying abroad at Universitat Mannheim. Coincidentally, they were planning on taking their trip the same time I happened to have my two-week winter break! I also have a friend Jordan who plays football (real football) in Nuremberg. I thought: two of my friends from home visiting two of my friends in Germany, at the same time I have two weeks off from school.... I can NOT miss out on this!!! With a little support from my Aunt Marijane and my Grandma Lady, I booked my ticket even before telling mom and dad!
Ever since, I have been juggling my studies with trip planning! Germany has never really been at the top of my list of travel destinations, but after doing some research, I couldn't be more excited to visit this amazing country!
My flight leaves Phoenix on November 14th and I return November 28th.

Only 6 more days until I leave!!!

I'll keep posting as much as possible throughout my trip. I'm sure I'll have plenty of fun stories to fill you all in on!
